Adopt a kiwi and help protect these taonga species and their habitat.

A national taonga and cultural icon, while some kiwi species are coming back, others remain vulnerable or endangered.

There are five species of Aotearoa New Zealand’s iconic flightless bird: the brown kiwi, great spotted kiwi/ roroa, little spotted kiwi/ kiwi pukupuku, rowi, and the tokoeka.

Threats

While conservation efforts are making a difference for kiwi, unmanaged populations continue to decline. The threats they face include:

Introduced Predators

Stoats and cats are a major threat to kiwi chicks, while dogs and ferrets frequently kill adult birds. Rats and rodents also compete for food with kiwi.

Small populations

Many kiwi populations are small and isolated reducing genetic diversity and increasing vulnerability to localised disasters such as floods and fires.

Habitat loss

Most of the natural habitat of kiwi has been converted into pasture or towns. While kiwi are adaptable and can live in scrub and plantation forests, pasture is not suitable for kiwi.
