Reynolds brings more than two decades of experience in organisations focused on conservation, sustainability and climate action.
She was most recently Country Director for The Nature Conservancy Aotearoa New Zealand, where she led major programmes to reforest lowlands and restore coastal wetlands.
Prior to that, Reynolds was Chief Executive of Predator Free 2050 Ltd, the organisation established to deliver New Zealand’s ambitious goal of eradicating stoats, possums and rats to protect native wildlife.
She was also Executive Director of the Sustainable Business Council, where she played a leading role in establishing the Climate Leaders Coalition – bringing together some of New Zealand’s largest companies to take action on climate change.
Reynolds says she’s excited to contribute to WWF-New Zealand’s mission.
“I’ve spent my career working to protect the things that make Aotearoa New Zealand so special – our native species, ocean, and wild places. Nature is part of who we are as New Zealanders and looking after it is what gets me out of bed every morning.
“Kayla leaves very big shoes to fill, but I’m excited to be joining an organisation with such a proud history of standing up for nature and achieving real impact. I can’t wait to get stuck in alongside the WWF team and its supporters.”
Hon James Shaw, Chair of the WWF-New Zealand Board of Trustees, says he’s delighted to be able to appoint someone of Reynolds’ calibre to the role.
“Abbie is one of New Zealand's most experienced and respected environmental leaders. She brings an exceptional combination of conservation and sustainability expertise, strategic leadership, and true passion for Aotearoa’s environment.
"I can think of no one better placed to lead WWF-New Zealand over the coming months as we continue our work to protect and restore nature in Aotearoa."
Reynolds will begin her role on 14 July and lead the organisation while CEO Dr Kayla Kingdon-Bebb takes a leave of absence to stand as a candidate in the General Election.
