Two years ago, a group of young people in Generation Zero came up with the idea for a new climate law: the Zero Carbon Act. This new law will establish a climate commission, set a long term goal, and give us a plan to get there.
Since then, thousands of Kiwis like you have come together to back the Act. Over 15,000 people have signed the petition.
Now, the government has heard your call. In October, the government will introduce the Zero Carbon Bill. But - what will this Bill say? Will it become the Zero Carbon Act we've been calling for, or just another compromise that needs fixing in five years' time?
That's where you come in. The government is calling for submissions from Kiwis like us by 19 July. Now, this is our chance. Together, it's possible to make sure that the Zero Carbon Act will stand the test of time and unlock a fair, just transition to a safe climate future for all New Zealanders.
We've included suggested answers to the government's questions, and tried to make it easier for you to make your voice heard. But the more you personalise your submission, the more impact it will have. If you can, please do take the time to edit our suggested answers to reflect exactly why an ambitious Zero Carbon Act matters to you.
That's why submissions like yours are so important. We know that our supporters' voices are being heard, because the government is working on the law we've been calling for!
The government has published a consultation document and has several meetings coming up. Our partners at Generation Zero also have some detailed policy documents. So, here's where you can find more information to help with your submission.
If you want to know more about what the government is planning, here's your chance. This document sets out the Ministry's analysis, explains the different options they're considering, and indicate which ones they prefer.
The government is running public meetings up and down the country. If you'd like to head along to show your support for an ambitious Zero Carbon Act, that would be great.
