Waiheke Island's Journey Towards Marine Protection and Regeneration
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the fantastic Future Search event that I was fortunate enough to attend on Waiheke Island recently. Co-led by mana whenua Ngati Pāoa and the local community, the event was part of the Waiheke Marine Project. It brought together diverse stakeholders to develop a set of common goals for marine protection and regeneration in the area.
The video below shows the story of how that event came together, shares the perspectives of some of the participants and shares some of the outcomes. It also shares the activities that took place during the three day event, and is an opportunity to see some of the energy and passion that was shared during the process.
Many people in Waiheke report huge marine degradation, but recognise that to make change, they need to collaborate and find common ground. They believe its important to invest in reconnecting with Te Taiao and with each other, to ensure that everyone comes along on the journey.
This video shares the Waiheke Marine Project's journey so far, but may also offer ideas on how others might carry out this kind of activity in their own communities.
