Last week, New Zealand came under lockdown, joining many countries around the world facing a global health crisis on an unforeseen scale.
Though we are staying in our bubbles, this difficult time is also bringing people together. Volunteers are bringing supplies to those most vulnerable; teddy bears are popping up in windows to cheer up kids on their neighbourhood walks; whānau, friends, and co-workers are connecting online. We are finding ways to show kindness and support to each other.
It is this unity that brought people together last Saturday night to take part in Earth Hour—a symbolic movement for the planet and a reminder of our ability to affect real change.
Whilst we were not able to get together in person, millions around the world switched off their lights for one hour from the comfort of their homes. New Zealand was one of a record-breaking 190 countries and territories that took part in solidarity for people and our planet, exemplifying the resilience of the human spirit amid a crisis.
We cannot tell you how much we appreciate all of you—the businesses, organisations, cities, government agencies, schools, and individuals—who took part in Earth Hour this year, at a time we needed it most.
Let’s continue to work together to take care of each other, and our one home.
