Marine Biodiversity

New Zealand has a unique and particularly rich marine flora and fauna. There are an estimated 65,000 known and unknown species and the level of endemism - species not occurring elsewhere - at 44% is particularly high, making the New Zealand marine region a hot spot of marine diversity worldwide.

'The Treasures of the Sea: Nga Taonga a Tangaroa' and 'Shining a Spotlight on the Biodiversity of the New Zealand Marine Ecoregion' are two publications by WWF-New Zealand that give you a rare insight into what lurks beneath the ocean waves.

Both of these resources are now available online.

The Treasures of the Sea: Nga Taonga a Tangaroa

The Treasures of the Sea: Nga Taonga a Tangaroa reviews and summarises information on the known living species across all the major groups of organisms in New Zealand's marine environment.

Shining a Spotlight on the Biodiversity of the New Zealand Marine Ecoregion

Shining a Spotlight on the Biodiversity of the New Zealand Marine Ecoregion maps life in our oceans, revealing where the hot spots of biodiversity are located.

Twenty-two marine scientists identified, described, and mapped key biodiversity areas and features for marine plants and animals at an expert workshop convened by WWF-New Zealand.
