Project Lantern

I want to protect our world because we need to live in it with the animals. Polar bears are my favourite animals, they are in trouble because the ice is melting.

Lanterns Paraded in Copenhagen

The 2600 lanterns made by Kiwi kids in a vote for Earth reached the UN climate summit in Copenhagen last week, and joined others from kids across the world in a snowy night time parade!

Children from Copenhagen took to the streets of the Danish capital for the Earth Hour Lantern Parade. Marching from the Planetarium to the City Hall Square, these young ambassadors for kids around the world literally carried their hopes for the future of the planet in the battle against global warming.

Led by popular Danish kids TV personality, Bubber, and Nickelodean's Spongebob Squarepants, children as young as six years of age marched through Copenhagen’s world-famous Tivoli Gardens en route to the City Hall Square.

The young marchers joined the thousands of Copenhageners packed into the City Hall Square for Earth Hour's special lights out event.

Voices of Kiwi kids who vote for Earth

Over 2600 Lanterns by kiwi kids displayed at Te Papa

Project Lantern's giant globe 'ballot box' on display in Te Papa's Wellington foyer.

Kids from all over New Zealand made lanterns decorated with messages of hope for leaders in Copenhagen. Before they were sent off to the big summit, they were displayed at Wellington's Te Papa

The eye-catching globe, filled with decorated paper lanterns made by school children from across New Zealand, went on display at Te Papa to send a strong message to politicians and the public from thousands of children nationwide.

The lanterns were decorated with pictures and words expressing each child’s personal reason for ‘voting’ for Earth, and against global warming.

"I vote Earth because without the earth we wouldn't exist", said Nicola Vincent, 10, Nelson. Other reasons children gave for voting Earth included: “There is just one earth so we have to look after it” and "Earth is our only option – make the right choice”.
