About

About this Ocean:Views Campaign

From our iconic beaches and familiar rocky shores, New Zealand’s oceans cover an astonishing 4.2 million square kilometers, 15 times its land area. New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone is fifth largest in the world, and home to an exquisite diversity of wildlife including seabirds, dolphins and whales, fish and deep sea corals. Almost half of the creatures in New Zealand’s oceans are found nowhere else on the planet.

Our oceans sustained Māori and then provided the resources for the livelihoods of the first Europeans. They are a central part of our culture and history; generations of New Zealanders have drawn creative inspiration from our seas, and our marine environment remains an inseparable part of what it means to be a New Zealander today.

Ocean:Views is a competition open to New Zealand residents only. It launched the first day of summer, 1 December, 2010, and concludes on World Oceans Day – 8 June 2011 – when the short-listed works will be unveiled and the winners announced. The short-listed works will then be exhibited in installations throughout the country.

Each creative work will stand alone, but together Ocean:Views will create a completely unique reflection of how we view our oceans - our national story of why our oceans and our people are inseparable. WWF hopes to inspire people to reflect on the significance of our oceans, and the opportunity we have today to protect it for future generations.

The competition is open to all New Zealanders or New Zealand residents, and is free to enter by submitting your Ocean:View online at wwf.org.nz/oceans.

Competition entries close midnight 15 April, 2011. Entries for Ocean:Views will be judged on creativity, originality, and how it tells a story celebrating New Zealand’s oceans and reflecting on New Zealanders’ unique connection to our seas. There will also be a prize for the People's Choice Award so be sure to check out what others have submitted and cast your vote!
