Rapid climate change is the most serious environmental challenge facing our planet. The cause is human activity. And so is the solution.

We need to sieze the exciting opportunity we have today to act for a living planet tomorrow. This is why WWF’s climate change program is so vital. It’s why our climate change campaigners here in New Zealand and around the world work tirelessly at all levels for the urgent action needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

WWF tackles businesses, governments and individuals to persuade them to take the urgent action needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

WWF's global climate change campaign aims to achieve the following results:

  • By 2010 the world has made significant progress to in global average temperature compared to stay below a 2 °C increase pre-industrial levels.
  • 550 countries are implementing adaptation strategies in key Ecoregions/biomes and sectors of their economies on the basis of national plans, to reduce vulnerability to climate change.

WWF-New Zealand works towards achieving these goals by campaigning for New Zealand to honour our Kyoto commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, specifically CO2 from the power sector, back to 1990 levels.

As well as working with policy makers to achieve our goals, WWF works with leading businesses at the forefront of sustainable business practice. We partner with global businesses serious about reducing their carbon footprint - and we get results. By 2010, WWF Climate Savers companies will have reduced their collective CO2 emissions by over 10 million tons.

As you would expect, we're leading by example in reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions in our operations. We were the first conservation organisation to go carbon neutral. And we work with leading businesses at the forefront of sustainable business practice to help them evolve to meet the new environmental challenges of the 21st century. We work to ensure the government has the most progressive climate change policies – and is a world leader on the international stage.
